PSQT Stone Carving & Sculpture Courses (since 1989)
are designed for beginners and all levels of skill.  We teach letter-cutting, relief carving, masonry, architectural detail and 3D sculpture (working with models, maquettes, drawings, and sketches) or people work directly from shapes and forms found in the freshly quarried stone itself.  The pure clean quality of air creates a clarity of light that helps to define forms as the sculpture emerges  giving  an inspirational experience of carving stone in its place of origin, a balance of elements, of sea, sky and stone. At the same time the quarry is a space to reflect, where human time connects to the vastness of geological time.

The stone carving skills that we teach have been handed down through 12 generations on Portland and are uniquely combined with the tutor’s backgrounds in sculpture, architectural detail and direct carving).  Tutors are qualified in sculpture from the Royal College of Art, Central School of Art & Design, Stone Conservation from the British Museum and applied architectural carving and stone work.

A PSQT record of attainment can be provided at the end of the course for those who are training.
